Osun Governor Adeleke Slams APC Chairmen, Councillors Over Alleged Illegal Tenure Extension

Osogbo, Osun State — Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, has strongly condemned the continued occupation of local government secretariats by chairmen and councillors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their actions as illegal, unconstitutional, and a direct affront to the rule of law.
In a statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and shared via X (formerly Twitter), Governor Adeleke stressed that the tenure of elected officials in Nigeria cannot be extended beyond the period prescribed by law, citing established Supreme Court judgments in support of his position.
“It is a settled matter of law that the tenure of elected officials in Nigeria cannot be extended by even a single day after its expiration,” the governor stated.
He specifically referenced the landmark Supreme Court judgment involving former Oyo State Governor, Rasheed Ladoja, where the apex court ruled that a governor’s tenure could not be extended despite an unlawful removal from office that lasted 11 months.
Governor Adeleke further disclosed that documents filed before the Supreme Court revealed that APC chairmen and councillors, through their legal representatives and the Attorney-General of the Federation, had admitted they had no lawful claim to office beyond October 22, 2025.
According to the governor, the affected APC officials also approached the Federal High Court seeking an extension of their expired tenure — a move he described as a clear acknowledgment that their tenure had indeed elapsed.
“Assuming, without conceding, that these APC officials ever had a legitimate tenure, it expired on October 22, 2025,” Adeleke said. “I sometimes wonder if we are truly operating under a democratic system. In Osun, it appears some individuals believe they are above the law.”
The governor revealed that he has formally written to the leadership of relevant federal security agencies to alert them to the situation, warning that the continued occupation of local government secretariats poses a threat to peace and public order in the state.
Governor Adeleke called on Nigerians and democracy advocates to rise in defense of constitutional governance and demand an immediate end to what he described as the “siege” on local government councils across Osun State.
“I therefore call on all Nigerians and champions of democracy to demand an immediate end to this unlawful occupation of local government offices,” he concluded.
