President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the Minister of Power, marking a new phase in the Federal Government’s efforts to reform Nigeria’s electricity sector.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Sunday, June 8, 2026, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Tegbe was formally inducted as a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). His appointment followed the resignation of the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down to pursue elective political office.
President Tinubu described Tegbe’s appointment as timely and strategic, particularly at a period of heightened national concern over electricity generation, transmission, and distribution challenges across the country.
The appointment process progressed through key constitutional stages. On April 30, 2026, President Tinubu transmitted Tegbe’s nomination to the National Assembly for screening.
The Senate subsequently confirmed him on May 6, 2026, after a successful screening exercise during which he assured lawmakers of his readiness to implement bold reforms aimed at improving power supply, grid stability, and sector efficiency.
Speaking at the screening, Tegbe emphasized his commitment to leveraging policy reforms, private sector participation, and institutional collaboration to address long-standing challenges in the power sector.
An indigene of Oyo State, Joseph Tegbe brings over 35 years of experience in fiscal management, economic reform, and strategic advisory services. He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa and later as Director-General of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership, where he coordinated high-level engagements to advance Nigeria’s economic and development objectives.
Analysts believe Tegbe’s blend of private sector expertise and public sector experience positions him to play a critical role in driving President Tinubu’s power sector reform agenda, with expectations of improved electricity supply, enhanced investor confidence, and sustainable sector growth.
