BREAKING: FG Has No Immediate Plan to Increase Electricity Tariffs – Power Minister

By Jamisi Newsline

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that there is no immediate plan to increase electricity tariffs, dismissing widespread reports suggesting that a tariff hike is imminent.
The Minister of Power gave the assurance while addressing concerns over recent speculations about electricity pricing, stating that the government’s current focus is on improving power generation, transmission, and distribution across the country while keeping electricity affordable for consumers.
According to the Minister, any future review of electricity tariffs will only be carried out after extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders and in strict compliance with existing regulatory procedures.
He explained that the Tinubu administration remains committed to transforming the nation’s power sector through increased investment in infrastructure, enhanced service delivery, and policies designed to attract greater private sector participation without placing unnecessary financial burdens on Nigerians.
The Minister further clarified that recent comments made by some government officials regarding electricity pricing had been widely misunderstood, noting that the discussions were focused on long-term sector reforms rather than any immediate increase in tariffs.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the Minister said efforts are ongoing to strike a balance between ensuring the financial sustainability of the power sector and protecting the welfare of electricity consumers, particularly vulnerable households facing economic challenges.
He urged Nigerians to disregard misleading reports circulating on social media and other platforms, advising the public to rely solely on official government communications for accurate information on electricity policies and reforms.
The Federal Government maintained that improving the reliability, accessibility, and quality of electricity supply remains a top priority as reforms in the sector continue. :::
