In a decisive move that underscores renewed political will in Nigeria’s electricity reform drive, the Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has rolled out a far-reaching action plan aimed at accelerating reforms and improving performance across the nation’s electricity sector.
The Minister made this known at the Second Quarter (Q2) Stakeholders’ Meeting of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), where regulators, generation and distribution companies, transmission operators, investors, and key industry players converged to review progress and chart a clearer path forward.
Speaking with clarity and political conviction, Tegbe stressed that fixing Nigeria’s perennial power challenges requires more than policy statements. According to him, success in the sector depends on stronger collaboration, strict accountability, and disciplined execution across the entire electricity value chain. His tone reflected a reform-minded leadership determined to translate plans into measurable outcomes for Nigerians.
At the heart of the Minister’s presentation was a reform agenda anchored on critical priorities, including strengthening grid stability and upgrading transmission infrastructure, boosting power generation through improved gas supply and operational efficiency, and fast-tracking nationwide metering to finally curb the burden of estimated billing on consumers.
He also emphasized the urgent need to restore the financial sustainability of the power sector, deepen private sector participation, and expand renewable energy development, while improving coordination among government agencies and industry operators to ensure reforms deliver tangible results.
Observers at the meeting noted that Tegbe’s approach signals a shift toward pragmatic governance and results-driven leadership in the power sector. His emphasis on unity of purpose among stakeholders was widely seen as a necessary political reset in an industry long plagued by fragmentation and weak execution.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Federal Government, the Minister assured stakeholders that the current administration will not relent in pursuing reforms that expand access to reliable electricity, improve service delivery, and unlock Nigeria’s economic potential.
