Fayose: Wike Would Have Faded Without Federal Appointment, Advises Fubara on Political Survival

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has remarked that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, might have faded into political obscurity if he were not currently serving in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
Fayose made the statement during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, January 9, 2026, while offering political counsel to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, amid the escalating political tension in the state.
According to Fayose, politics is a fiercely competitive space where survival depends on strategy and experience, stressing that nothing is handed to anyone on a “silver platter.” He urged Governor Fubara to draw lessons from his past mistakes, especially now that he has regained full executive authority following the end of the federal intervention in Rivers State.
“The coming back of Fubara should make him a better person. If he made a mistake the first time, the second time he shouldn’t go through that route. Politics is not served à la carte. Can you imagine Wike not being the Minister of FCT? He would have become history,” Fayose said.
Fayose’s comments come against the backdrop of a renewed political crisis in Rivers State. The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, has commenced fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
On Thursday, January 8, 2026, barely months after the lifting of a six-month state of emergency in the state, 26 out of the 32 lawmakers signed a notice of gross misconduct against the governor.
The seven-count allegation includes claims of extra-budgetary spending, the alleged unauthorized demolition of the House of Assembly Complex, and the withholding of statutory funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission.
Despite Governor Fubara and the majority of the lawmakers now belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Assembly has resolved to serve the impeachment notice within seven days. Lawmakers also announced the suspension of deliberations on the 2026 Appropriation Bill pending the conclusion of the impeachment investigation.
