Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns to Nigeria After Serving UK Jail Term
Abuja, Nigeria — Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria two years after serving a prison sentence in the United Kingdom.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was convicted alongside her husband over her role in an organ trafficking conspiracy prosecuted under the United Kingdom’s Modern Slavery Act 2015. While Ike Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months as the principal actor in the case, his wife received a four-year and six-month jail term for facilitating the travel arrangements of Ukpo David, a 21-year-old Nigerian street trader.
Investigations revealed that the couple, through a medical middleman, Obinna Obeta, arranged for Ukpo to travel to the UK so his kidney could be harvested for their daughter, Sonia, who suffers from chronic kidney disease. Obeta was also convicted and is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in the UK.
Beatrice Ekweremadu arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday, January 21, where she was received by friends and relatives, marking the end of a legal saga that began in 2022.
Sources told Politics Nigeria that her return has triggered celebrations in her hometown of Mpu, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, where residents are anticipating her homecoming.
Meanwhile, her husband, Ike Ekweremadu, remains incarcerated in the United Kingdom as he continues to serve his sentence.
