Nigeria’s push for infrastructure development is back in the spotlight as Bola Ahmed Tinubu seeks approval for a $516 million external loan to finance a major highway project expected to connect key parts of the country.
The proposed project focuses on improving a long stretch of road linking the northern and southern regions, a move the government says will boost trade, reduce travel time, and strengthen national connectivity. According to officials, better roads could lower transportation costs and support economic activity across multiple states.
However, the loan request is already stirring debate. Critics are raising concerns about Nigeria’s growing debt profile, questioning whether new borrowing is the right move at a time when many citizens are dealing with rising living costs and economic pressure.
Supporters, on the other hand, argue that infrastructure investment is necessary for long-term growth. They believe projects like this could create jobs, improve logistics, and help businesses operate more efficiently.
As the National Assembly reviews the request, Nigerians are watching closely — not just to see if the loan gets approved, but whether the promised impact will actually be felt in everyday life.
