The Lagos State Government has Ban Installation of Eze Ndigbo and Seriki in Lagos
The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on the installation and recognition of certain traditional titles, including Eze Ndigbo and Seriki, across the state without official approval.
According to the government, the move is aimed at stopping the growing trend of unauthorised and self-appointed traditional rulers, which it says has the potential to create tension, confusion, and breakdown of order within communities.
The state government clarified that only chieftaincy titles approved by the Governor, through the appropriate ministry, are legally recognised in Lagos. Any individual or group that installs or parades such titles without approval is acting outside the law.
Authorities warned that those who violate the directive risk arrest and prosecution, stressing that Lagos will not tolerate actions that threaten peace or undermine the state’s traditional and administrative structure.
The government emphasized that the policy is not targeted at any ethnic group, but strictly focused on enforcing existing laws regulating chieftaincy matters in the state.
