Statistics Canada to Recruit 32,000 Temporary Workers for 2026 Census, Pay Up to $31.32 Per Hour

Statistics Canada has announced plans to recruit about 32,000 temporary workers across all provinces and territories ahead of the 2026 National Census, scheduled for May 2026.
The national statistics agency disclosed this as part of its large-scale preparations to ensure the successful delivery of the census, which plays a critical role in shaping government planning and policy decisions across Canada.
According to Statistics Canada, the census data collected will be used to provide “an accurate statistical picture of Canada,” supporting key decisions in sectors such as healthcare, education, housing, transportation, and other essential public services.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
The temporary positions are open to individuals who:
Are legally adults in their province or territory
Are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or holders of valid work permits
Reside in Canada and have a Canadian home address
Applicants must apply online through the official Census jobs portal.
Roles and Work Structure
The recruitment covers both supervisory and non-supervisory roles, with work schedules and employment periods varying by position and location. Most roles are field-based, involving direct interaction with households rather than office work. Much of the data collection will occur during evenings and weekends.

Statistics Canada noted that crew leader and enumerator roles make up the majority of the vacancies, meaning most successful applicants will likely be assigned to these positions.
Duties and Duration
Enumerators are responsible for collecting census data by visiting households, following up on non-responses, and engaging directly with residents. They typically work 20 to 40 hours per week between May and July 2026.
Crew Leaders, on the other hand, supervise enumerators, coordinate field activities, monitor progress, and handle administrative duties. These roles usually require about 40 hours per week and run from March to July 2026, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
Pay and Allowances
Hourly wages depend on the role:
Enumerators: $25.87 per hour
Crew Leaders: $31.32 per hour
In addition to wages, employees may claim authorized work-related expenses. Statistics Canada explained that because census work is community-based and often involves travel within assigned areas, eligible expenses may include mileage and parking costs.
“Employees are compensated for kilometres driven, helping to reduce out-of-pocket transportation expenses associated with door-to-door visits,” the agency stated.
