Kano Hisbah to Enforce Ban on Female Passengers Sitting Beside Tricycle Drivers

The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced that it will begin enforcement against the practice of female passengers sitting beside drivers of commercial tricycles, popularly known as Keke Napep, across the state. The board said the move is part of its efforts to promote morality and uphold Islamic values in public spaces within Kano State.

According to Hisbah officials, the sitting arrangement where a female passenger occupies the front seat next to a male driver is considered inappropriate under the state’s moral guidelines. As a result, female passengers will be required to sit only at the back of tricycles, while operators are expected to ensure full compliance before conveying passengers. Defaulters may face warnings or other sanctions as determined by the board.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among residents, with some supporting the directive as being in line with Kano’s religious and cultural principles, while others have raised concerns about convenience, personal freedom, and the practicality of enforcement, particularly during peak transport hours. Hisbah patrol teams are expected to monitor major roads and transport hubs as the enforcement begins, with residents and tricycle operators urged to comply with the new directive.
