Fresh uncertainty has reportedly crept into speculations surrounding the possible defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources familiar with the development told Politics Digest that the governor is increasingly cautious about making the move, particularly without the backing of his political mentor, amid fears of potential political fallout. Although reports emerged weeks ago suggesting that Governor Yusuf was set to dump the NNPP for the APC, the process is said to have slowed significantly following consultations with key stakeholders.
Insiders revealed that the governor is insisting that all terms and conditions tied to his alleged defection must be clearly documented and mutually agreed upon before any public declaration is made. However, this demand has reportedly not been met, further complicating the situation.
A source close to the matter disclosed that several party leaders and political stakeholders remain unconvinced that Governor Yusuf can successfully take such a major political step independently.
“On several occasions, the governor appeared ready to defect, but he usually retreats after engaging in discussions with party leaders and other influential figures,” the source said.
According to the source, Governor Yusuf is said to be seeking firm written guarantees, including assurances of a ministerial slot and the replacement of certain federal appointees from Kano State with individuals loyal to him.
The source added that such conditions are considered unusual, noting that other governors who defected to the APC did not reportedly make similar demands. The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Muftwang, was cited as an example of a governor who allegedly switched parties without engaging in extensive behind-the-scenes negotiations.
Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf recently held his second State Executive Council (SEC) meeting in Abuja since assuming office. Sources claimed he travelled to the Federal Capital Territory with plans to formally announce his defection to the APC after the meeting, but no such announcement was eventually made.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain a response from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, proved unsuccessful.
