Nigerian security agencies have reportedly uncovered a sophisticated plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, with 40 individuals formally identified and detained in connection with the alleged conspiracy. The arrests include senior military officers, a police officer, and civilians, all alleged to have participated in planning, funding, and coordination.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, the plot involved a network of officers and civilians who allegedly aimed to disrupt key government operations and target prominent officials. Security agencies revealed that the conspirators had conducted reconnaissance and allegedly discussed plans to carry out coordinated attacks on strategic locations.
Investigations indicate that the alleged plot had origins dating back to May 29, 2023, when the conspirators reportedly attempted to interfere with the presidential inauguration but halted their plans due to funding and logistical constraints. The conspiracy is said to have been revived in 2025 following additional financial resources.
High-profile targets allegedly identified by investigators included President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and top legislative and military leaders. Security agencies emphasized that no attacks were carried out, as intelligence operations preemptively disrupted the plot.
The detained individuals comprise:
25 military officers from various branches of the armed forces
1 police officer from the Presidential Villa security detail
14 civilians allegedly involved in logistics, financing, reconnaissance, and propaganda
Notable among the suspects are Brigadier General MA Sadiq, Colonel MA Ma’aji, and several lieutenant colonels from strategic formations across the country.
The Defence Headquarters has reportedly completed investigations and forwarded findings to the appropriate authorities for further action. A special panel led by the Chief of Defence Intelligence uncovered the network and coordinated intelligence efforts with the State Security Service (SSS). Investigations remain ongoing, and security agencies are monitoring for additional persons of interest.
While the majority of the suspects remain in custody, authorities continue surveillance operations to prevent further threats. Enhanced security protocols have been implemented at the Presidential Villa, military installations, and other strategic locations nationwide.
Investigations are now at the prosecution stage. Military personnel may face court-martial pending presidential authorization, while civilian suspects are under review by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and SSS for their alleged roles.
Security agencies described the operation as one of the most extensive alleged coup plots uncovered in recent Nigerian history. Officials emphasized that the suspects remain innocent until proven guilty and that the investigation has been conducted in accordance with established legal procedures
