Former Oyo Governor, Sen. Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Set To Become New Olubadan Of Ibadanland

Following the shocking and solemn passing of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2024, all traditional and succession protocols point toward High Chief Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, former Governor of Oyo State, as the next in line to ascend the revered Olubadan stool.

Oba Olakulehin, who reigned for just about a year, joined his ancestors shortly after celebrating his 90th birthday, plunging the city into mourning. His demise, though peaceful, has created a vacuum in the traditional leadership of the Ibadanland, one of the most historically and politically significant cities in Yorubaland and Nigeria.

In line with the centuries-old Ibadan chieftaincy system, which operates a unique rotational ascension model — the most senior high chief in the Olubadan-in-Council, barring any formal objection or disqualification, is next in line to the throne. This paves the way for High Chief Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, who has dutifully climbed the traditional hierarchy over decades with dignity and patience.

Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a seasoned politician, technocrat, and respected elder statesman, served as the Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007. Beyond his political achievements, he is known for his deep understanding of Yoruba tradition, commitment to the welfare of the Ibadan people, and dedication to justice and equity.

The Ibadan Kingmakers, under the guidance of the Oyo State Government and the Olubadan-in-Council, are expected to begin the formal processes of ratifying his ascension in accordance with customary laws and practices. Barring any unexpected changes, the announcement of his confirmation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland may follow in the coming days.

Ibadan indigenes at home and in the diaspora have begun sending in tributes for the late Oba Olakulehin, while also expressing hope and optimism in the anticipated reign of High Chief Ladoja, whose leadership is expected to bring stability, wisdom, and national prestige to the Olubadan throne.
