U.S. Government Declassifies Over 230,000 Pages On The Assassination Of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

In a landmark step toward historical transparency, the Trump administration on Monday released over 230,000 pages of formerly classified documents related to the 1968 assassination of civil rights leader, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The release was coordinated by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in collaboration with the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who made the announcement, emphasized that the document disclosure is part of a broader federal initiative to shed light on pivotal moments in American history.

“The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard stated. “This release is a commitment to truth, transparency, and the preservation of our nation’s civil rights legacy.”

The release follows an executive order signed months earlier by President Donald Trump, mandating full transparency into the assassinations of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., President John F. Kennedy, and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. The order called for all relevant federal agencies to declassify documents and provide the American public with a more complete understanding of these defining events.

Historians, legal scholars, and civil rights advocates are expected to examine the newly disclosed records for deeper insights into the circumstances of Dr. King’s death and the government’s handling of the investigation.
