Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have marked 55 years of diplomatic relations, celebrating over five decades of cooperation, partnership, and shared development goals between both countries.
The milestone was commemorated in Abuja during activities linked to the 2026 Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations, where government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and cultural representatives from both nations gathered to reflect on the journey so far and the future ahead.
Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China were formally established in 1971, and since then, the relationship has grown from basic diplomatic engagement into what both countries now describe as a comprehensive strategic partnership. Over the years, cooperation has expanded across key sectors including trade, infrastructure, education, culture, technology, and agriculture.
Speaking at the event, representatives from both sides highlighted the importance of people-to-people relations, noting that cultural exchange has played a major role in strengthening mutual understanding. The celebration featured cultural performances, exhibitions, and displays that blended Nigerian and Chinese traditions, symbolising unity and shared respect.
China remains one of Nigeria’s most significant economic partners, with collaborations seen in major infrastructure projects, transportation development, industrial growth, and technical training programmes. Nigerian officials also reiterated the country’s commitment to long-standing diplomatic principles guiding the relationship, while expressing optimism about expanding cooperation in areas that directly impact citizens.
