AFCON 2025: Oshoala Hails Iwobi for Silencing Critics, Emerging from Jay-Jay’s Shadow

Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, has lauded Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi for his impressive performances at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting that the Fulham star has finally moved beyond constant comparisons with his legendary uncle, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha.

Oshoala made the remarks following Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique on Monday night, a win that confirmed the Super Eagles’ place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Reflecting on Iwobi’s journey with the national team, Oshoala noted that the midfielder has long carried the burden of unrealistic expectations since making his Super Eagles debut in 2015.

“Since he made his debut for Nigeria in 2015, Iwobi has played under the weight of comparisons with his uncle,” she said.

“No matter what he does, his performances have never been enough for many Nigerians who judge him strictly by the standards set by Jay-Jay.”

According to the Barcelona Femeni forward, AFCON 2025 has marked a turning point in how Iwobi is perceived by fans and critics alike.

“At AFCON 2025, Iwobi has finally stepped out of his uncle’s shadow and shut his critics up permanently. He has been one of Nigeria’s best players in this tournament,” Oshoala added.

Although the 28-year-old did not register an assist in the win over Mozambique, Oshoala highlighted his influence in Nigeria’s attacking play, particularly in the build-up to the opening goals.

“His through balls created both goals, and he was the foundation of every attack in the final third. It was an all-round performance that shows why he deserves more appreciation,” she said.

Iwobi has earned over 70 caps for Nigeria since his debut in October 2015. He was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished third at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt and also featured in Nigeria’s second-place finish at the 2023 edition in Côte d’Ivoire.

At club level, Iwobi has represented Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, where he remains a key figure in midfield.

Oshoala, a multiple African Women’s Footballer of the Year award winner, is herself a veteran of Nigerian football. She has represented the Super Falcons at several Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA Women’s World Cups, and remains one of the most experienced players in the squad.

Nigeria will discover their quarter-final opponents later this week as the Super Eagles continue their quest for continental glory at AFCON 2025.
