The Lagos State Government has announced a $2 million commitment towards the Makoko Water Cities Project, a development initiative aimed at transforming the historic waterfront community into a more structured and sustainable settlement.
The project is designed to improve living conditions in Makoko by introducing modern infrastructure while preserving its unique aquatic lifestyle. Officials described the initiative as a long-term urban renewal plan focused on safety, environmental sustainability, and economic inclusion.
According to the state government, the funding represents Lagos’ initial contribution to the project, with plans to attract additional support from development partners to expand its scope.
Authorities also emphasized that the project is part of broader efforts to address challenges in waterfront communities, including unsafe structures and environmental concerns, while avoiding forced displacement of residents.
