The Nigerian Army has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against insurgency in the North-East following the killing of a high-ranking Boko Haram commander and 10 other fighters during a coordinated night operation in Borno State.
According to military sources, the operation was carried out by troops under Operation HADIN KAI in the Konduga axis of Borno State after actionable intelligence revealed the presence of senior insurgent figures in the area. The raid took place late Saturday night and extended into the early hours of Sunday.
The slain commander, identified as Abu Khalid, was described as one of Boko Haram’s top field leaders and a key figure responsible for coordinating attacks, logistics, and movement of fighters within parts of the Sambisa Forest and surrounding communities.
During the encounter, troops reportedly engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the death of Abu Khalid and ten other insurgents. Military personnel also recovered assorted weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, food supplies, and communication equipment from the hideout.
Security sources confirmed that no casualties were recorded among Nigerian troops, describing the operation as precise and intelligence-driven.
The latest development comes amid renewed military offensives targeting Boko Haram and ISWAP elements across Borno and neighbouring states, as authorities intensify efforts to degrade the operational capacity of terrorist groups and restore lasting peace to the region.
Residents have been urged to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely information, as clearance operations are expected to continue in known insurgent enclaves.
