Kyrsten Sinema Admits Relationship in Court Filing, Seeks Dismissal of North Carolina Lawsuit

Former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema has acknowledged in newly filed court documents that she was involved in a romantic relationship with a man who was married at the time. However, she is asking a court in North Carolina to dismiss a lawsuit brought against her, arguing that the court lacks jurisdiction over the matter.

The case stems from a lawsuit filed in September 2025 by Heather Ammel against Sinema. The suit relates to Sinema’s relationship with Heather’s estranged husband, Matthew Ammel.

In her motion to dismiss, Sinema confirms that she and Matthew Ammel began a romantic relationship in 2024, several months before his formal separation from his wife. According to the filing, the relationship started in late May 2024, with the first physical encounter occurring on May 27 in Sonoma, California. The documents further state that the pair were intimate in other locations in the following months, including New York City, Washington, D.C., Aspen, and Phoenix.

Sinema’s legal team argues that the lawsuit should not proceed in North Carolina because none of the alleged physical encounters occurred in the state. They maintain that the locations of the meetings are critical in determining whether North Carolina courts have the authority to hear the case.

Heather Ammel’s complaint also alleges that Sinema sent romantic messages to her husband while he was physically present in North Carolina, including a photograph of herself wrapped only in a towel. Sinema denies sending such a photograph. She further contends that even if any message was sent, she was not aware that Matthew Ammel was in North Carolina at the time, and therefore such communication should not establish jurisdiction.

The case now hinges on whether North Carolina courts have the legal authority to hear the claims or whether the lawsuit will be dismissed on jurisdictional grounds.
